Can you tell us about yourself and how you got involved with Meals on Wheels in Greater New Brunswick?

My background is in early childhood education and child nutrition.  However, I became involved when my husband and I were invited to a Meals on Wheels fundraiser by our across-the-street neighbor.  I joined the Board of Directors in 2014 and have loved every minute of my involvement!

What is the role of the Board President and Board of Directors in the operations of the Meals on Wheels organization?

The main role is overseeing the program, making sure we are in compliance as a 501c3 nonprofit organization, and ensuring that we live up to our mission.  In addition, we are a working board and act as strong support to our Executive Director, Shareka Fitz.

What is your favorite part about working for Meals on Wheels in Greater New Brunswick?

In addition to my administrative duties, I also deliver meals, so I get to interact with our clients, which I love.  I also love encouraging our diverse board in coming up with new ways to serve the homebound seniors of New Brunswick and Highland Park.

How would you describe Meals on Wheels in five words?

Nutrition, Lifeline, Caring, Service, Community

What do you want people to know about Meals on Wheels in Greater New Brunswick?

We are “more than a meal!”  Not only do we serve two meals a day, five days a week, but we are there to make sure of the health and safety of our clients.

Can you describe an example of how the clients and/or volunteers have inspired the Board’s work?

The generosity of our volunteers, not only with their time, but also with donations and extra help, is inspiring.  One example is a volunteer who purchased two air conditioners for some clients.

How can the public best support the work of Meals on Wheels in Greater New Brunswick at this time?

If you have time to volunteer, we really need folks to help deliver our meals.  And, of course, financial support is always appreciated!

What are the organizations greatest needs, and how is the organization working to meet these needs?

As I mentioned, volunteers to help deliver are really needed.  Covid-19 really took a toll on our volunteer roster.  We have a variety of ways to reach out for volunteers.  We are also looking to increase our services to meet the needs of our clients.  One recent example is our program to provide cleaning products to our clients.
