In December, friends and strangers united for the 9th Annual Crawl for Hunger in the City of New Brunswick. Conceived by its founder, Michael Tublin, the Crawl for Hunger is more than just a local pub crawl— it’s a testament to Tublin’s belief that no one in our society should go hungry. What began as a personal endeavor with a handful of friends and local restaurants has blossomed into an annual event with donations spanning nine different organizations to date.
We caught up with Tublin to discuss this year’s event, which generously benefited Meals on Wheels in Greater New Brunswick.
Can you share with us what the Crawl for Hunger is all about, and how it initially got started?
The Crawl for Hunger is a fun way to spend an evening giving back to our community and help those who struggle with food insecurity. It started with me asking a few friends and restaurants to support this cause.
How did you personally become involved in the Crawl for Hunger, and why is this cause important to you?
I created the Crawl for Hunger over nine years ago by myself. It is important to me because I feel strongly that we as a society should all help one another. No one in our country should go hungry.
What motivated you to choose Meals on Wheels in Greater New Brunswick as the recipient of this year’s Crawl for Hunger, and what impact do you hope this donation will have?
Meals on Wheels Greater New Brunswick was chosen this year because as a resident of New Brunswick, I wanted to support a hyper local food bank/service in our community. Over the nine years, the donations have gone to nine different organizations. I hope the donation will help someone not go hungry.
Can you share some highlights or memorable moments from this year’s event?
For me the highlight is spending a fun evening with friends (and strangers) to help those less fortunate than ourselves.
As we look ahead to 2024, what message or advice would you give to people who want to contribute to alleviating hunger? Are there specific ways that individuals or the community can get involved or support the cause?
My message for 2024 is to help your fellow human being, reach out, check in, show some love, we all need it. I think if people want to help their community, they should reach out to their local churches, food banks, and local government and find out where help is needed, then volunteer your time, your expertise, and if you can donate, please do. The 10th annual Crawl or Hunger will be Dec. 10, 2024. Details coming in the Fall.
